Thornton Wilder: "Theophilus Nort"
A friend of mine have introduced this author to me some five years ago. Since then I have read many of his works, first translations, then originals.
Yesterday, looking for a present for my other friend's birthday, I found one of his best novels. I am not exactly rich, but I just could not walk away from that book, 'cause there hardly is anything better to be found. In the evening, on my way home, I could not resist a temptation to read it - as much as I could.
This book is in my opinion one of the very best and it's main character is my hero, in a way. Unambitious, not aggressive, clever, honest, friendly and kind, he travels little bit light-headedly through life. The earns his living by teaching and occupies himself with people around.
Exactly my type of hero! Generals, space captains, freedom-fighters - they do impress me, but never ever had I even a slightest desire to be like them. Well, I cannot say that I am much closer to this Nort character - for this I am too submerged in various self-examinations. But if I will ever wake up from this stupidity, I want to be like him.
